This Pygmalion is almost a miniature painting masquerading as a powder compact.
Dating from the 1950s and made in England, the lid is decorated with a wonderfully atmospheric cottage and street scene in warm autumnal shades. Tiny houses nestle amongst the trees beneath a soft sky, all framed by a richly textured gold-tone border.
Turn it over and the decoration continues with an engine-turned reverse, while inside is the original mirror, powder well and mesh sifter.
Approximately 9.5 cm diameter.
The original fittings remain present and the painted scene is still the star of the piece — full of those warm, slightly nostalgic colours that work so beautifully on mid-century Pygmalion compacts.
