It looks like a Stratton compact until you open it — and then instead of powder you get an entire emergency sewing kit.
Dating to 1986, this lovely Stratton accessory has a decorative enamel lid featuring a rose and butterfly, framed in polished gold tone. Inside, the case is fitted with its little sewing essentials, cleverly arranged in the compact format Stratton knew so well.
The surviving contents include thread and miniature scissors, with the fitted interior keeping everything neatly in place.
The dated back stamp is particularly useful, giving us a firm 1986 date rather than having to estimate from style alone.
There are signs of storage and previous handling, but the enamel decoration remains bright and the contents give the piece much of its appeal.
A wonderfully quirky bit of later Stratton production — because apparently even a loose button deserved to be dealt with elegantly.
