A wonderfully early Stratton cigarette case dating to the late 1930s, with an unusual black and gold snakeskin-effect finish covering both sides. The bold pattern has a distinctly Art Deco feel and makes this a particularly striking example of Stratton’s pre-war accessories.

The case opens to reveal its original sprung metal cigarette retainer, stamped “Stratton Brand – Made in England”. This early style of fitting is quite different from the adjustable retainers found in later Stratton cigarette cases and is a lovely feature in its own right.

Measuring approximately 8.5 x 8 cm, the case has a satisfyingly substantial square form with softly rounded corners and a push-button opening.

There is considerable age-related wear to the decorative finish, including rubbing, scratches and areas of loss, all clearly shown in the photographs. The interior also shows age and use. Despite this, the wonderful snakeskin pattern remains very apparent and the case has heaps of authentic period character. The original retaining mechanism is still present.

An unusual early Stratton and a fabulous piece of 1930s British Art Deco design, particularly appealing for a collection of early Stratton, vintage smoking accessories or vanity pieces.
