A particularly lovely and scarce 1950s Stratton Star, also known as the Slab, powder compact, decorated with a wonderfully detailed waterside scene of three colourful mallard ducks amongst the reeds, with further ducks swimming in the distance. The soft blues, greens and russet tones are beautifully preserved and make this an especially attractive example.
The Star/Slab is one of Stratton’s less commonly encountered compact forms, distinguished by its substantial rectangular shape with clipped corners. Measuring approximately 8 x 5.5 cm, it has a wonderfully distinctive appearance compared with Stratton’s more familiar round compacts.
Inside is a bright gilt interior with Stratton’s Compact-in-Hand inner powder lid and a large clear mirror. This example is also accompanied by its original-style grey felt pouchette and pink-edged mesh sifter, making it a particularly pleasing collector’s piece.
The compact is in very good vintage condition. The pictorial decoration remains remarkably strong and colourful, with only very light age-related wear, while the gilt interior is particularly bright and attractive. The pouchette shows some expected age and storage wear.
A fabulous and difficult-to-find Stratton Star/Slab, combining the scarce rectangular format with a particularly charming and much less frequently encountered duck design.
