A genuine Victorian Jahncke’s Patent tin, made by the London firm Jahncke Ltd, specialist manufacturers of small metal boxes during the late 19th century.
Jahncke was founded by Ernest Jahncke in 1873 and operated from the Canonbury Works, Dorset Street, Islington, London. The company became known for its patented methods of constructing small tin boxes, producing containers for numerous trades including needle cases, pharmaceutical boxes and match or vesta cases.
Jahncke’s patented box construction was already being registered by 1880, and surviving period examples are characteristically marked “Jahncke’s Patent.” The company was incorporated in 1893, and in 1895 Bryant & May acquired an interest in the business, subsequently using Jahncke-made boxes for its wax vestas.
This example has the compact metal construction associated with Jahncke’s late Victorian production and retains its original period finish and decoration.
The tin shows genuine signs of its considerable age, including surface wear, rubbing and marks to the finish, but these have not obscured its distinctive period appearance or construction.
An interesting surviving piece of Victorian London manufacturing, from a specialist company whose patented small boxes were once supplied across a surprisingly wide range of British trades.
