Vintage 1930s Enamel Sailing Ship Powder Compact with Concealed Rouge – Attributed to Bliss Brothers

A wonderfully unusual vintage powder and rouge compact dating to around the 1930s, featuring a striking black enamel base and a detailed sailing ship design set against a finely patterned gold-tone ground. The sides are particularly lovely, decorated all the way around with intricate embossed floral scrollwork.

Measuring approximately 5.5cm across, this beautifully engineered little compact has a clever multi-compartment design. Opening the compact reveals the original powder puff and fabric sifter, while the polished metal “mirror” section lifts independently to reveal a concealed rouge compartment beneath, still containing its vivid pink rouge and original applicator.

The construction and distinctive concealed rouge arrangement closely correspond with known Bliss Brothers compacts of the period, and this piece is therefore attributed to Bliss Brothers, although no maker’s mark is visible and the attribution cannot be confirmed.

A particularly charming and unusual example of early 20th-century vanity design, combining decorative enamel work with an ingenious mechanical interior.

It remains in good vintage condition with age-related wear, patination and marks consistent with its age and use. Please study the photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description.

A fabulous collector’s piece, especially appealing for its dramatic sailing ship decoration and wonderfully clever concealed rouge compartment.
