This large 1950s Gwenda powder compact is particularly striking for its colourful tapestry-style floral lid, which has the appearance and texture of a tiny piece of woven fabric framed in gold-tone metal.
The rectangular compact measures approximately 9 x 7.8 cm and depicts a bouquet of pink and red roses amongst smaller blue and purple flowers.
Inside is a clear mirror and engine-turned gold-tone powder well.
It remains with both its original felt pouch and presentation box, making it a wonderfully complete example.
The compact is in excellent vintage condition with only light signs of previous handling. The textile panel remains bright and intact, the mirror is clear and both hinge and clasp operate smoothly. The original pouch and box have also survived well.
Its generous size and richly coloured woven floral panel give this Gwenda much more presence than a typical round compact — almost a miniature piece of textile art made for the handbag.
