There is something wonderfully opulent about black enamel covered in fine gold decoration.
Made by Le Rage, this square vintage compact has an intricate damascene-style lid filled with scrolling floral detail and cherub decoration. Open it and the richness continues, with a generously sized mirror surrounded by gold-tone metalwork delicately etched with flowers.
The original powder screen remains inside.
Approximately 7.5 cm square.
The outer gilt decoration has softened and faded in places, there is a tiny mark to the mirror and a mark remains inside where the original sponge has perished.
None of that takes away from the wonderful drama of the design. This is a compact made to catch the eye — black, gold and richly decorated, with all the glamour of a little object once intended to be opened in public.
