A vintage Stratton square powder compact featuring a detailed terrier dog portrait, an unusual animal subject from a maker much better known for its floral, scenic and geometric designs.
The compact measures approximately 5.7 cm square and has a gold-tone case surrounding the terrier image. Its smaller square format gives it a quite different appearance from Stratton’s more familiar full-size round compacts.
Inside, it retains its original mirror and powder compartment, and it also comes with its black protective pouch.
The compact has signs of previous use and handling, but the terrier image remains clear and attractive and the original fittings are retained.
Stratton produced a wide variety of decorative subjects over the years, and animal designs such as this make an interesting change from the company’s more frequently encountered florals. The combination of the square format, compact 5.7 cm size and terrier portrait gives this example plenty of individual character.
