A wonderfully unusual vintage musical powder pot, dating stylistically to approximately the 1950s, with a bold yellow early-plastic body and integral mechanical music movement.
The substantial bowl-shaped container is quite different from a conventional handbag compact, having been designed as a larger vanity accessory for holding loose powder.
The construction includes brass fittings and a mirror, together with the incorporated music-box mechanism.
The yellow body has previously been described as Bakelite. Without a material test I would prefer to describe it cautiously as Bakelite or Bakelite-type early plastic, rather than guarantee the material solely from appearance.
There are signs of age and previous use to the body and fittings, all of which contribute to the wonderfully period appearance of the piece.
A fabulous bit of 1950s vanity design — part powder container, part music box and sufficiently eccentric to make an ordinary powder bowl look positively boring.
