A beautiful and unusual 1930s Coty Paris powder compact, decorated with a hand-painted woodland landscape over the extraordinary iridescent blue of genuine butterfly wing.

The scene depicts a winding path beneath a slender white-trunked tree, surrounded by deep green foliage and touches of pink flowers. Beneath the painted detail, the butterfly wing creates an intensely luminous blue background that shifts from turquoise to violet as the compact catches the light. It is a wonderfully effective technique and one particularly associated with collectible Art Deco butterfly-wing compacts of the period.

Measuring approximately 5.5 cm in diameter, the gilt-tone case is marked COTY PARIS to the reverse and has an attractive engine-turned wave design. Inside is a powder well, mirror and the original Coty-branded powder puff.

The butterfly-wing panel retains superb colour and iridescence, although there is some age-related wear to the painted decoration and surface, as shown. The gilt case also has expected wear consistent with its age. The interior presents particularly well and the original puff is a lovely survival.

A striking and increasingly difficult-to-find Coty compact, with the brilliant blue butterfly wing giving the little painted landscape an almost jewel-like quality.
