A beautiful and unusual antique powder compact dating to the 1920s, with an ornate pressed floral design surrounding a woven-effect heart cartouche.
Measuring approximately 5 x 4.5 cm, the compact has a silver-tone exterior with a warm gold-tone interior. Inside is a clever rotating powder plate with three petal-shaped openings, allowing access to the loose powder well beneath, together with its original mirror.
A very similar period compact is documented as a Marinello powder and rouge compact; this example is the smaller single powder version. As this piece is unmarked, it is offered as Marinello style rather than definitively attributed.
The compact remains in good antique condition for its age, with visible age-related wear and deterioration to the interior mirror and finish, all of which can be seen clearly in the photographs. The clasp and moving components remain functional.
A wonderfully characterful survivor from the glamour of the 1920s and a particularly interesting addition to an early compact collection.
