A fabulous and highly collectible vintage Pygmalion No. 1960 Globe powder compact, designed as a miniature three-dimensional map of the world. The spherical case has a beautiful satin silver finish to the oceans, contrasted with gleaming gold-tone land masses, with countries, cities, seas and lines of latitude and longitude finely detailed across the surface.
The globe opens around its equator to reveal a circular mirror and an ingenious fitted powder compartment with its hinged inner cover. This example is particularly desirable for retaining its original Pygmalion sifter, signed powder puff and black drawstring pouch, together with the scarce original gold-coloured box labelled “PYGMALION No 1960 GLOBE COMPACT MAP OF THE WORLD”. The compact itself is marked “FOREIGN”.
The No. 1960 Globe is one of Pygmalion’s most distinctive novelty compact designs and dates to the 1950s. Complete examples are increasingly difficult to find, particularly with the original presentation box and accessories still together.
The compact is in perfect condition, with no flaws or faults noted. The interior is equally beautifully preserved, with a clear mirror and the original sifter and signed puff present. The original box shows wear consistent with its age, as photographed.
A superb complete example of this iconic Pygmalion design and a wonderful statement piece for a serious vintage compact collection.
