Vintage 1930s India Map Powder Compact – Pink Celluloid – Five Ruby Set – Art Deco

A wonderfully unusual 1930s Art Deco souvenir powder compact featuring a beautifully detailed map of India.

The substantial octagonal case measures approximately 8cm across and has a pierced silver-tone metal map laid over a striking translucent pink celluloid-style backing. Five small faceted pink-red stones are individually claw set into the map, corresponding with locations across India and Ceylon. Closely comparable period examples are described as being set with rubies; the stones in this compact have not been independently gem tested.

The map is beautifully detailed with period place names including India, Kashmir, Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Karachi, Ceylon, the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, giving the compact wonderful historical interest as well as decorative appeal.

The compact is particularly substantial for its size, weighing approximately 110g. Inside is a full mirror above the powder compartment, complete with its original fabric sifter. The compact opens and closes securely.

No maker’s name or silver mark has been found, so the metal is described conservatively as silver-tone rather than sterling silver.

Presented in very good vintage condition for its age, with expected surface wear and patina visible in the photographs. The pink backing remains particularly attractive and gives a beautiful contrast against the pierced metalwork.

A scarce and striking example of an early Indian souvenir vanity compact, combining Art Deco design, unusual pink detailing and fascinating period cartography.
