Vintage 1950s Pygmalion Sonata No. 21 Grand Piano Powder Compact – Original Puff & Sifter
A fabulous and highly collectable vintage Pygmalion Sonata No. 21 powder compact, dating to the early 1950s and wonderfully designed in the form of a miniature grand piano.
Measuring approximately 7 x 6 cm, the compact is beautifully detailed throughout, with an ornate gold-tone case, textured decoration and three little folding piano legs allowing it to stand as a delightful miniature object in its own right.
The shaped lid opens to reveal an equally distinctive piano-shaped mirror, while beneath sits the original fitted powder compartment. Particularly lovely is the survival of both the original shaped sifter and matching pink Pygmalion Sonata powder puff – pieces which are so often missing from these compacts.
The inner powder lid is beautifully decorated and clearly marked “Pygmalion”.
A charming and ingenious piece of mid-century vanity design and one of Pygmalion’s most recognisable novelty compacts.
The compact remains in lovely vintage condition overall, with age-related wear to the finish and some deterioration to one area of the mirror, clearly shown in the photographs. The hinges, catch and folding legs are all present.
A wonderful example for a Pygmalion, novelty compact or vintage vanity collection.
