Made in England by Clover, this vintage musical powder compact has a checkerboard lid of genuine mother-of-pearl and abalone shell, individually set within a gold-tone rectangular case.
Measuring approximately 8 x 5.5 x 1.5 cm, the natural shell panels range from pale pearlescent tones to deeper greens and blues, with the variation characteristic of the materials themselves.
Inside, the compact retains its original pink Clover powder puff, sifter and mirror and appears unused.
A mechanical musical movement is built into the case and is working, although it currently plays fast. The tune has not been identified.
The shell inlay is intact, the mirror remains clear and the gold-tone case is bright with only light storage marks.
The combination of genuine shell inlay, complete original powder fittings and working musical mechanism makes this a particularly attractive example of Clover’s more elaborate vanity ware.
