Vintage German 900 Silver Powder Compact, Floral Engraved Scalloped Octagonal Compact, c.1920s–1930s

A substantial German 900/1000 silver powder compact, probably dating from the 1920s–1930s, with a particularly attractive scalloped octagonal outline and richly worked decoration on both sides. At approximately 97g complete, it has a satisfyingly weighty presence.

One exterior panel is finely engine-turned with a close linear pattern, framed by scrolling foliage and small flowers. At the centre sits a raised flower basket, detailed with a bow-tied handle, latticework basket and abundant blooms. The reverse is more lavishly engraved, with large stylised flowers, leaves and flowing foliage across a textured background.

Inside, the compact retains its circular mirror and powder well. The interior is marked 900 for the silver fineness, alongside Germany’s crescent moon and crown national silver hallmark, the Halbmond und Reichskrone, used from 1888 onwards. A separate pictorial maker’s mark remains unidentified, It measures approximately 8.5cm across.
