An unusual vintage powder compact made from green celluloid, decorated with a colourful courting scene and gold scroll detailing.
The moulded green case provides the background for the central figural scene, depicting a traditionally dressed couple, with gilt scrollwork adding further decoration around it.
Celluloid was widely used for decorative personal accessories during the first half of the 20th century because it could be moulded and coloured in ways that were difficult to achieve with metal alone. Its depth of colour is particularly noticeable in this rich green example.
Inside, the compact retains its mirror and powder fittings.
There are marks, scratches and signs of previous use to the case and interior, but the pictorial decoration and gold detailing remain clearly visible.
