Vintage Rare Stratton Wedge Powder Compact Peach Enamel Stone-Set Clasp Motif 1930s

A beautiful and unusual Stratton Wedge powder compact, introduced in 1938 and distinguished by its wonderfully distinctive asymmetrical profile. Viewed from the side, the lid and base deepen in opposite directions to create the model’s characteristic wedge shape — described in period advertising as “The New thin wedge shape box”.

The rectangular case is finished in a warm peach-apricot enamel, softly framed by silvery-toned metal and a fine dark linear border. At the centre sits an attractive applied stone-set ornament with a circular lower detail and geometric upper design, giving this delicate compact a particularly glamorous late-1930s character. The reverse is enamelled in the same lovely apricot shade. Inside are a mirror, powder well with its mesh sifter, and a peach-toned powder puff. The interior is marked “Stratton Reg. Des. N.” and “Patent 246945”.

This compact is in good vintage condition overall, with its charming original colour and unusual wedge construction well retained. There is enamel loss and chipping around the edges of the reverse, alongside age-related marks, light surface scratches and wear to the metal finish. The mirror has noticeable age-related spotting and deterioration around the edges, while the surviving powder puff shows use and cosmetic marks. The Stratton Wedge is recorded by Juliette Edwards as a quite rare model, making this a particularly appealing example for a collector who appreciates unusual compact forms as well as the elegance of 1930s enamelled vanity pieces.
