Vintage 1920s German ST Marked Art Deco Powder Compact – Enamel Romantic Couple – Rotary Mechanical Sifter

A beautiful and unusual German mechanical powder compact dating to approximately 1924–1930, combining delicate period decoration with a wonderfully ingenious early powder-dispensing mechanism.

Measuring approximately 5 cm, the compact has a cream enamelled exterior decorated with a charming romantic scene depicting an elegantly dressed couple in a garden setting, surrounded by delicate floral detail and a decorative border.

Inside is a circular mirror and an exceptionally attractive engine-turned gold-tone powder compartment. Rather than a conventional removable sifter, the compact incorporates an integral mechanical rotary powder dispenser. Turning the patterned metal plate opens and closes the circular aperture, allowing access to the powder beneath while keeping the compartment securely closed when not in use.

This distinctive mechanical construction is associated with German compacts of the 1920s, with this type of rotary mechanism documented from around 1924 onwards.

The compact retains its original powder puff and is stamped GERMANY to the inner mirror surround. A separate engraved ★ ST ★ mark is also present. The same ST marking has been documented on other surviving German vanity pieces of this period, although the manufacturer behind the mark has not yet been identified.

The compact remains in lovely antique condition for its approximately 100 years of age, with expected age-related wear and patination. The original mirror has areas of silvering loss, and the enamel and metalwork show signs consistent with age and previous use, all shown clearly in the photographs.

A particularly fascinating survivor from the early years of compact design, combining an attractive Art Deco-era enamel scene with an unusual working mechanical powder mechanism, original puff and intriguing ★ ST ★ mark.
