A beautiful and particularly unusual vintage Kigu of London barrel cigarette case, dating to the late 1950s and decorated with a wonderful coloured butterfly and floral design.

The curved front is finished in a soft turquoise-green enamel with two beautifully detailed butterflies amongst delicate flowers and foliage, accented in gold. The reverse and rounded ends have Kigu’s finely engine-turned gold-tone finish.

This distinctive curved form is often described as Kigu’s barrel or bolster cigarette case. Measuring approximately 8cm x 3cm, it opens along the side hinge to reveal the gold-tone interior.

The coloured butterfly decoration is associated with Kigu’s late 1950s range, with coloured butterfly designs appearing in the company’s 1957 price list.

A particularly lovely collector’s example as it retains its original Kigu “Compacts of Character” presentation box together with its fitted protective pouch. Finding these decorative barrel cases complete with their period packaging is increasingly difficult.

The case remains in lovely vintage condition, particularly the decorative enamel front, with only light age-related wear consistent with its age. The original box and pouch naturally show some signs of age and storage, as photographed.

A gorgeous and wonderfully evocative piece of 1950s Kigu design, and an especially appealing example for a collector of Kigu, vintage vanity accessories or butterfly-themed pieces.

Case measures approximately 8cm x 3cm.
